work n lousy international student support

sorry for the MIA-ness, but i've been freaking tired everyday after work.

i only work 3 days a week, but that is enough for me! especially since im required to wear heels to work and the only time i can sit down is during my 2 breaks. 1st break is 45 mins, 2nd is 30 mins. if u count in the time it takes to walk to the staff canteen, line up to get n pay for food, visit the loo and walk back to the cafe, i only get to sit roughly 20 mins or less each time.

tmr i have to be at work from 9am-8pm, so i dont care, imma wear flats!

also the makeup requirement (its freaking *harods , so the staff have to look good) makes me wake up an extra hour earlier each day coz i take forever to do makeup. so for tomorrow, i'll have to wake up at 7am. the other hour is for travel time, and when i reach there, i have to turn in my dirty uniform for a fresh one. that all takes time as well. but i do like that i dont have to do laundry for my uniform :D
(at least not the top half, the slacks are mine.)

but whining aside, i do like my new job very much. so far everyone has been very nice to me and i've not encountered any super horrible customers :D
also, i'm learning how to make proper coffee. whilst i dont drink coffee myself, i still find it very interesting to learn how to make, and the smell is lovely ;)

*i left one "r" out incase they track websites... i dont want them to stumble across this! how awkward... :S

besides work, what i've been doing during my spare time is trying to sort out my visa extension. my visa ends in early august, but i have some resits to do mid-august, so i'll have to extend my visa to cover those dates.

im quite dissatisfied with my uni coz they dont really have a international student services department. all they give us is an email address for the "visa office". you cant even meet an advisor to chat with them face to face about whatever help you may need.

and when i emailed them, most of the reply was just "check with the uk border agency". WTF, how very helpful. if the info was so easy to find, why do you think i emailed you in the 1st place??? *rolls eyes*

sure most of the info is there, but aren't you supposed to provide support and help to the students??? damn lazy. and there are also documents that would help an application, but are not necessary for the application and therefore aren't on the UKBA website. dont you think students would like to know that?? i mean, a visa extension costs GBP357, so you can be damned sure imma throw in everything that i can to help support my application!

ugh, im just so disgusted at their lack of international student support.

well, thats what i've been up to. oh and i am most probably going to legoland on friday! :D

helpful links n i got a job!

been getting bored with how my blog looks and cant find a blog skin that i like, so i just tweaked the colours a little. like it?

***************

for those who are in the UK, are cheap like me and love freebies, THIS is an amazing website. just sign up and they will send emails to you whenever there are freebies available. all u have to do is to follow the instructions and viola! freebies in the mail! or you could get vouchers too!

they always put up rimmel competitions on the site. so far i've received 2 mascaras and a foundation from rimmel. all full sized! this was the latest mascara i received. cant wait to try it out!!! and this is the foundation i received. i have it in soft beige. its a tad dark for my skin, but i match it with my current foundation which is a tad light. hehe~

Another awesome site is MyCityDeal. they have daily deals that are emailed straight to you. the way is works is that they sell you vouchers to events, restaurants, spas, salons... etc., at huge discounts. for example, you pay £8 for £20 worth of food at a restaurant. or you pay £25 for a beauty treatment that originally costs £150.

those are my 2 favourite cheapo sites right now :D

and recently i bought some roxy (dress £9.99) n ripcurl stuff from this site. it sells semi-branded stuff pretty cheap. standard delivery is £3.99 and my stuff arrived in 3 days.

ok... enough about money going out. lets talk about money coming in! i've got a job at HARRODS!!! ok fine, so i'm just waiting staff at a kids restaurant in harrods, but its still freaking harrods can! i'll be eligible for store wide staff discounts too (so thats money going out again...)! the pay isnt as high as i'd like it to be, but its ok, better than minimum wage and also nearly £2 more than my previous pay (£4.80) at subway.

err... thats about all i can say. they're really strict at harrods and i had to sign a contract which included a confidentiality clause. i doubt i'll be seeing any celebrities though... unless they bring their kids to the kids restaurant for lunch or something. oh and before i was allowed to work there, i had to go for a medical check-up at the staff building and submit a stool sample to make sure we have no infections or something (coz i'll be handling food). i hope my stool sample comes out clear! =p

tuesday will be my induction day. wish me luck!!!

waitressing trumps office job?

i sent out my cv to several places a few days ago and received a call from a restaurant as regards my cv. instead of the waitressing job i initially applied for, they were offering me an office job. something to do with accounting.

according to the guy, i was over qualified to be a waitress and as it happened, they had an office worker vacancy. although i prefer customer service sort of jobs, i was still quite excited about this job because office jobs pay better than plain old waitressing. the guy then said someone from the office would be contacting me the next day... which was today.

the other guy called me in the morning (waking me from my glorious slumber!) and after a brief chat, it transpired that the office was in elephant and castle (at the end of the barkerloo tube line!) and not only would i have to ride the entire tube line to get there (11 stops!), but i would also have to take a bus after reaching the elephant and castle tube station in order to reach the office.

now, not only is it far, but elephant and castle is in my mind a rather dodgy area at the fringes of london... the only thing that i would go there for is MOS (ministry of sound). Also, i was more interested in waitressing than in a boring office job (god knows i'll have plenty of opportunity for that when i start chambering!). so i turned the job offer down.

seconds after i put down the phone, i began to regret. what kind of idiot turns down a job opportunity in the current economic climate??? summore it was a job opportunity of a higher standard than the one i initially applied for! plus it would no doubt look tonnes better on my cv than if i did waitressing!

after beating myself up over it and whining to my family about my dumb move, i've calmed down and no longer feel too bad about it. after all, im just looking for a summer job and it would be best to do something that i actually enjoyed :)
