she stared at it, steadily beating away. it was an ugly lump of a thing. having been stabbed and wounded so many times, it had scabs and fresh scars overlapping all over it. she felt sick at the sight of it yet unable to tear her gaze away.
in a sudden movement, she tossed it into a chest and locked it resolutely. hurriedly now, she rushed to the deck, faltering every few steps.
she ran to the railing and swung her arm back, tossing the chest as far as she could into the sea. then she crossed over to the opposite side of the deck and dropped the key gently into the sea.
then she crossed her fingers and waited. several long moments passed.
then she felt it.
a soft fluttering in her chest. slowly, it became a steady beat.
it was back. this wasnt the first time she threw it away and this wouldnt be the last time it defied her.
