actually, it might not even be called the law building. i dunno wad its official name is, but we call it the law building coz the law department is here. the law department refers to the lecturer's rooms and law office, not to be mistaken with where we have our classes. we have our classes in the main campus. we only go to the law building if we wanna find our lecturers, or to hand in assignments, and occasionally to collect documents. i hope you are not confused =p
beautiful huh?
its very near to cheney student village where i live. less than 5mins walk.
it overlooks a beautiful open space.
well, the story goes that it was once owned by a very wealthy man. but he became bankrupt and committed suicide in his yatch. thus his house was sold off and is now used as an office. my more sensitive friends find this building eerie, but i dont really feel anything and still walk past it in the middle of the night to get home, instead of taking the long way round. *shrugs*
it is huge and normally students get lost wandering the unfamiliar halls.
thats the reception area
this is the 2nd floor (or the 1st floor if u count the entrance as the ground floor)
i think it looks rather museum-ish and not like a house. i mean if i had a house like this, i'd certainly not furnish it like this (although i admit it looks grand) because its not warm. and houses should exude warmth.
stairway
the lights were pretty, but u cant really see from this pic.
there's even a lift in here.
albeit a very small and cramped one. obviously not made for flocks of students.
but i found the whole building to be very cramped.
maybe it was not originally like this, and was renovated to accomodate rooms for each lecturer, thus cramping it up.
law department sign for lost students
see, so cramped!
and because the house is quite ancient, the floorboards are very noisy and creak when u walk on them. not exactly what one would expect from a rich mans house.
thats all the pics i took. i didnt really wander around coz i was only there to get my lecturer to sign my bodleian library form.
one of the perks of studying in oxford is access to this esteemed library.
taken from wikipedia:
"Before being granted access to the library, new readers are required to agree to a formal declaration. This declaration was traditionally oral, but is now usually made by signing a letter to the same effect — ceremonies in which readers recite the declaration are still performed for those who wish to take them, these occur primarily at the start of the University's Michaelmas term. The English text of the declaration is as follows:
- I hereby undertake not to remove from the Library, nor to mark, deface, or injure in any way, any volume, document or other object belonging to it or in its custody; not to bring into the Library, or kindle therein, any fire or flame, and not to smoke in the Library; and I promise to obey all rules of the Library."
i had to do an oath just to enter a library. whoa... dramatic betul.
but its cool la since this is where the hogwarts library was filmed. lol~
and not just anybody can enter the library, u must either have a signed library form from your university, or be a judge. wtf
haha... i dont know what the other ways are, but i know that one of the reasons that we have to be very serious in this library is because judges use this library too.
all this talk about the library and i havent even officially entered it yet. WTF
LOL!!!
but when i do, i can assure u that i will definitely take some pics of it!
cool information: "Since J.R.R. Tolkien had studied philology at Oxford and eventually became a professor, he was very familiar with the Red Book of Hergest which was kept at the Bodleian. He later created his own fictional Red Book of Westmarch telling the story of The Lord of the Rings. Many of Tolkien's manuscripts are now at the library."
